Mrs. Agnes Maureen (Dunphy) Shea, of Waltham, died at home surrounded by her family on Wednesday, January 10, 2018. She was 91.
Born on January 9, 1927 in Palmer, Massachusetts she was a daughter of the late Henry Dunphy MD and Helena B. (Santos) Dunphy. She graduated from Palmer High School and later attended Simmons College in Boston for two years. She later attended St. Elizabeth's School of Nursing in Brighton where she graduated as a registered nurse in 1949. Maureen worked as a post-surgical nurse at Boston City Hospital. In 1950 she married Watertown native Paul Shea and remained at home to raise their nine children. Her husband, a well-known Waltham artist and former art director for the Waltham Public Schools died on February 9, 2009.
She was an avid quilter and enjoyed her quilting classes at the Waltham Senior Center with good friend, Vera Brown. Maureen looked forward to her trips to the Berkshires and summer vacations in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. She maintained her friendships with nursing friends at St. Elizabeth's and enjoyed the visits from her neighbors and hosting them at the many parties at her house. She adored her husband Paul and he often referred to her as 'My Happiness' and she was often depicted in many of his watercolors. They are now reunited in heaven. Maureen was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. She will be greatly missed.
In addition to her husband, Paul she is predeceased by her siblings, Edward, Charles, William and Henry Dunphy Jr. and Helene Papirio and brother-in-law, Frank Shea.
She leaves her children, Paula Vizard and her husband, Joseph of Waltham, Maureen Dowse and her husband, Rev. James of Bristol, ME, Michael Shea and his wife, Beverly of Waltham, Carol Shea Copan of Wiscasset, ME, Kevin Shea and his wife, Angelic of Newburyport, Brenda MacGovern and her husband, Edward of W. Newton, Thomas Shea and his wife Michele of Nashua, NH, Kathleen Montesanti and her husband, Frank of Waltham and Mary Shea Rogers of Winthrop; also survived by 20 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; nieces & nephews; her sister-in-law, Rosemary Corkum and her husband, Richard.
Family and friends will honor and remember Maureen's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Tuesday, January 16th from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Mary's Church, 133 School Street, Waltham where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne will be held on Thursday, January 18th at 11 a.m.
