Aira V. (Niittymaki) Schkuta

Mrs. Aira V. (Niittymaki) Schkuta, of Waltham, died Monday, April 20, 2020 in Newton – Wellesley Hospital. She was 91.
Aira was born March 21, 1929 in Hameenlinna, Finland a daughter of the late Jaako Soini and Helvi Niittymaki. She married Ukranian native Georg Schkuta on August 7, 1953 in England and later immigrated to the United States in 1968 settling in Waltham. Georg died July 24, 2018.
She worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse for Middlesex County Hospital for over 17 years before retiring. Aira and her late husband, Georg were active members of Lakeview Congregational Church. Her hobbies and interests included painting, knitting, crochet, travel, camping, square dancing, and gardening. She was also active in the Boston Finlandia Foundation.
She leaves her children, Ann Schkuta of Norwood, Andrew Schkuta (Cheryl) of Burlington and Paul Schkuta (Rhonda) of Imperial, Pennsylvania; her grandchildren, Katherine Lazarides-Zwirner (Torbert), Anesti Lazarides, Efthemia 'Mimi' Lazarides, Alexandra 'Allie' Lazarides, George Schkuta (Kristi), William Schkuta and Tyler Schkuta; her great-grandchildren Leora, Annalise, and Madison; and nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by her sister Eva Nichols.
Due to the ongoing health crisis around the world and in our community, funeral services for Aira are private. A Life Celebration to be held in the future will be announced.
