Waltham – Mr. Alfred R. Centola, of Waltham, died Thursday, July 2, 2015 at his home. He was 90.
Al was born in Allston on August 31, 1924, a son of the late John and Mary (Abbondanzio) Centola, and was raised in Watertown. He graduated from Watertown High School in 1943 and during World War II he served with the United States Air Force.
A Waltham resident for the past fifty-nine years, he worked for forty-five years as a histologist in the Histology and Pathology Department at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, retiring in 1999. He was a member of Our Lady's Parish in Waltham and the Piave Fume Lodge No. 1036 of the Sons of Italy in Watertown. Al also belonged to the Amvets in Watertown. He and his family also spent many happy summers in Yarmouthport on the Cape.
His wife of forty-seven years, Mary T. (Pistorio) Centola, died August 6, 2003.
Al leaves his children, Christine R. Gordon and her husband, Charles, Jr., of Bolton, Valerie A. Quigley and her husband, Neil, of Medway, Mark R. Centola of Plaistow, New Hampshire and Cynthia M. Rogers and her husband, Gary, of Waltham; his grandchildren, Alessandra and Taylor Gordon, Allison Quigley and her fiancé, Justin Grandy, Derek Quigley, Nicole Centola, Stephen Centola and his fiancé, Amanda Barroso, Stephanie Brooks and her husband, Justin, and Samantha and Nicholas Rogers; his great-grandchildren, Brianna and Joseph Grandy and Madeline Brooks; his sister, Anna Kasprzyk of Waltham; his dear friend, Irene Palumbo of Watertown and many nieces and nephews.
He was also a brother of the late Virginia Corsetti, Carl Centola, Benedict Centola and John Centola.
Family and friends will honor and remember Al's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Monday, July 6th from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 11 a.m. on Tuesday morning before leaving in procession to Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12 noon. Burial will be in Saint Patrick's Cemetery, Watertown.
