Waltham - Mr. Alfred M. Dion, of Waltham, died Tuesday, November 7, 2006 after a lengthy illness. He was 83. Born and raised in Waltham, a son of the late Emile and Florence (Roberts) Dion, he was a lifelong resident. Until his retirement in 1988, he worked for forty-two years at the Raytheon Corporation as a master pipe fitter. Alfred was a graduate of Waltham High School where he was a captain of the baseball team with a .448 batting average. He was selected as a member of the All Inter-scholastic Baseball Team of 1942. He was also recruited by the Chicago Cubs as a left handed outfielder. He served with the United States Army during World War II where he was a squad leader of a reconnaissance squad supervising patrols and scouting missions for tank battalions in Europe. He was decorated with two battle stars and a Purple Heart. He was always seen around Waltham taking long walks and also had a large music collection. He was the husband of the late Antoinette M. (Fedele) Dion and brother of the late Roland, William, and Robert Dion, and Marie Boisvert. He leaves one daughter, Victoria J. Dion of Waltham; one brother, Eli Dion of Florida and many nieces and nephews. The Funeral will be held Monday at 9 a.m. from The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte.20), Waltham followed by a Funeral Mass in Sacred Heart Church, 311 River Street, Waltham at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham. Visiting hours will be held Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m.
