Alfred A. Scafidi

Waltham - Mr. Alfred A. Scafidi of Waltham died Saturday, January 15, 2005 in Wingate at Sudbury. He was 74. Born in Waltham, a son of the late Salvatore and Vincenza (Camuti) Scafidi, he was a lifelong resident. Until his retirement in 1993, Mr. Scafidi was the proprietor of Embassy Trophy Company in Waltham. He was a 1948 graduate of Waltham High School where he captained the baseball team and served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. His passion for baseball followed him throughout his life until illness forced his retirement as Waltham High School baseball coach in 1993. He had served in that capacity for thirteen seasons and before that coached the Hudson Catholic High School baseball team from 1976 until 1979. He helped to co-found and had been a coach for the Stan Musial Baseball League and had also coached in the Waltham Connie Mack Baseball League where he had also been a past president. In 1956 and in 1981 he was a coach for teams that played in the Connie Mack World Series. He had also been a coach for the USA High School Baseball team that played throughout the United States and in Taiwan. Mr. Scafidi was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge No. 1018 in Waltham and had been honored by that organization by being named its 'Man of the Year'. He also belonged to the Waltham Elks, the Joseph F. Hill American Legion Post No. 156 in Waltham and the Waltham Sons of Italy. He was also a former member and past chairman of the Waltham Parks and Recreation Board. The husband of the late Joyce M. (Dennis) Scafidi, he leaves his children, Jacqueline M. Scafidi of Waltham, Alfred A. 'Babe' Scafidi, Jr. and his wife Cathy of Worcester, Stephen J. Scafidi and his wife Joan of Hudson, NH and Lawrence M. Scafidi and his wife Jennie of Waltham; his grandchildren, Tim and Jeff Scafidi of Worcester, Kathryn, Alexandra and Henry Scafidi of Hudson, NH and Mariah, Taylor and Michael Scafidi of Waltham; his sisters and brothers, Demi Marmonti of Waltham, Connie Ferro of Hallendale, FL, Carl Scafidi of Waltham, Lenny Scafidi of Hallendale, FL, Tony Scafidi of Northboro, Jeannette Scafidi and Bernie Scafidi both of Waltham; his mother-in-law, Dorothy L. Dennis of Waltham; his sister and brother-in-law, Carol A. Sweet of Waltham and Michael L. Dennis of Falmouth; and many nieces, nephews, friends and former players. He was also a brother of the late Josephine Collura, Salvatore 'Tuidi', James, Ernest, Richard, Robert and Raymond Scafidi. He was also a son-in-law of the late James A. Dennis and brother-in-law of the late Capt. James A. Dennis, Jr., U.S.N. and Richard Dennis. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral at 9 a.m. Friday, January 21, from The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham followed by a Funeral Mass in Sacred Heart Church, cor. of River and Newton Sts., Waltham at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
