Alfred J. Texeira

Waltham – Mr. Alfred J. Texeira, Sr., of Waltham, died on Monday, June 20, 2011 at the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford. He was 91.

Al was born in Fall River on November 21, 1919, a son of the late Joseph and Virginia (Pimental) Texeira, and had lived in Cambridge before moving to Waltham in 1955. Until his retirement he worked in the Athletic Department of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge.

During World War II he served with the U.S. Army’s 14th Armored Division; nicknamed the ‘Liberators’. Al spent more than two years fighting in Europe from the invasion at Sicily into Italy to France and finally to the Rhineland and Central Europe. The unit was credited with liberating more than 200,000 prisoners during the final months of the war, including more than 20,000 Americans being held at Stalag VII, the largest prisoner of war camp in Germany.

He was a member of the PFC John M. Sullivan, USMC Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 10334 in Waltham, the Disabled American Veterans and had been a longtime parishioner of Our Lady’s Church in Waltham.

He leaves his wife of 64 years Mary E. (Moynihan) Texeira; his children Patricia A. McLean and Janice E. Loporto, both of Falmouth and Alfred J. Texeira, Jr. of Waltham; his grandchildren, Jana Demeo, Talon Demeo, Zoe Demeo, Stella Wallace, and Nicholas McLean; his great-granddaughter, Savannah Wybecki; his brother and sisters, Manuel Texeira of Ontario, California, Beatrice Audette of Nantucket and Marylou Ternullo of Delray, Florida and many nieces and nephews.

Al was also a brother of the late Joseph, Anthony, Everett, and Lee Texeira.

Family and friends will honor and remember Al’s life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Thursday, June 23rd, from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Friday morning before leaving in procession to Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will be held at 12:45 p.m. in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
