Newtonville – Mrs. Alice M. (Peters) McGettigan, of Newtonville, died Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at her home. She was 82.
Alice was born in Boston on October 6, 1928, a daughter of the late John and Gertrude (Hennessey) Peters, and was raised in the Neponset section of Dorchester. She had been a resident of Newtonville for the past 43 years. Until her retirement Alice worked for First National Stores, which later became Edwards Stores. She was a longtime volunteer at Waltham Hospital and for the Newton Parks and Recreation Department.
The wife of the late Edward M. McGettigan, she leaves her daughter, Margaret A. ‘Peggy’ Vaglica and her husband, Stephen, of Newtonville; her granddaughter, Jill Vaglica; her sisters and brother, Kathryn Carroll of Florida, Ann Saucier and Lorraine Scheele, both of Connecticut and Edward Peters of Quincy and many nieces and nephews.
Alice was also the mother of the late Robert P. McGettigan and a sister of the late William, John ‘Jack’, Robert and Gerard Peters and Joan Trieger.
Family and friends will honor and remember Alice’s life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Sunday, August 21st from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9:30 a.m. on Monday morning before leaving in procession to Our Lady Help of Christians Church, 573 Washington Street, Newton where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Newton Cemetery.
