Waltham – Mrs. Alice L. (Dunn) Reid, of Waltham, formerly of Dorchester, died peacefully at her home on Monday, October 29, 2012. She was 87.
Alice was born in Boston on February 19, 1925, a daughter of the late Frank and Alice (Hennebury) Dunn. She was raised in Dorchester where she graduated from the Jeremiah E. Burke High School for Girls in 1942. After graduation she went to work for the Boston Edison Company where she met her future husband, Newton native Thomas C. Reid, at a company dance. By then Tom was serving with the United States Navy but was attending the gala as a former Edison employee.
The couple was married on February 20, 1944 in Saint Margaret's Church in Dorchester. After the war Tom and Alice moved to Arlington for a time before settling in Waltham in 1952 where they raised their family and have been residents since. Alice also worked as a secretary for the Boit, Dalton and Church Insurance Company.
She was long active in the Waltham community as a Cub Scout den mother and as a leader of the Girl Scout Brownies. She devoted more than 3000 hours as a volunteer at Waltham Hospital and was a longtime member and past Prefect of the Ladies Sodality at Saint Jude Parish.
In addition to being Tom's beloved wife of 68 years, Alice was the devoted mother of Thomas G. Reid of Plymouth, David C. Reid, and his wife, Ellen, of Waltham and the late Nancy J. Reid. Also left to mourn her passing are her grandchildren, Thomas Leo Reid, Robert C. Reid, Michael C. Reid and Allison M. Reid all of Plymouth; her daughter-in-law, Marian Reid; and her nieces and nephew, Jan Luongo of Wakefield, Andrea Kantaros of Peabody and Jay Corry of Texas.
Alice was also the sister of the late Mildred Corry.
Family and friends will honor and remember Alice's life by gathering to visit at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday morning, November 1st, in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham before leaving in procession to Saint Jude Church, 147 Main Street, Waltham where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Benedict Cemetery, West Roxbury.
