Waltham – Mrs. Alice (Henchey) Tierney, of Waltham, died Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at Nashoba Valley Medical Center. She was 78.
Alice was born in Woburn on December 7, 1933, a daughter of the late Hon. William H. and Elizabeth (Cashman) Henchey, and was a graduate of Saint Charles High School in Woburn. She and her family were founding members and longtime parishioners of Saint Anthony of Padua Church in Woburn.
She earned her bachelor's degree from the College of New Rochelle in New Rochelle, New York and a master's degree in education from Boston College. Before pausing her career to raise her children she was an elementary school teacher for the Winchester public schools.
Until her retirement Alice worked for more than twenty years in the central office for the Stigmatine Fathers and Brothers on Lexington Street in Waltham. She had also been a parishioner at Saint Jude Church, Sacred Heart Church and at Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Chuch, all in Waltham. She also volunteered her time assisting the teaching staff at Saint Jude School in Waltham.
Above all else, Alice loved her children and her grandchildren, who were the center of her life. She was a longtime member of the Ladies Guild of the Stigmatines, enjoyed lunching with friends and was a crossword puzzle enthusiast.
Her husband, Francis J. Tierney, died October 11, 1991.
Alice leaves her children, Mary Judith Tierney and her husband, Marshall Loring, of Shirley and Joseph H. Tierney and his wife, Vicki Gore Tierney, of Chelmsford; her grandchildren, Elizabeth E. and Robert J. Grazioli and Emily M. and Patrick F. Tierney; her brother and sister, Rev. Joseph C. Henchey, C.S.S. of Yonkers, New York and Sr. Mary Judith Henchey, R.D.C. of Mahopac, New York; her former son-in-law, Bob Grazioli and many loving nieces and nephews.
She was also a sister of the late Elizabeth H. Stenger, William H. Henchey, Jr. and James M. Henchey.
Family and friends will honor and remember Alice's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Friday, August 17th, from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Anthony of Padua Church, 851 Main Street (Rte. 38), Woburn where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Woburn.
