Danvers - Mrs. Anastasia H. (Hayes) Sutermeister, of Danvers, formerly of Wayland and Waltham, died Wednesday, January 19, 2011 in her home. She was 85.
Anastasia was born in Waltham on April 9, 1925 a daughter of the late Thomas and Mary (Riley) Hayes. She was a graduate of Waltham High School and served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve during World War II. She moved to Wayland in 1953 before moving to Putnam Farm Assisted Living in Danvers in 2009.
Anastasia worked as an administrative assistant at Brandeis University in Waltham. She began in the Admissions Office in 1949. In 1964 she took a maternity leave for 9 years before returning to work in the Classical Studies Department at the University and enjoyed full retirement in 2004. She treasured the many relationships and friendships that developed while employed at Brandeis.
A faith-filled woman she was a longtime member of Saint Joseph’s Church in Lincoln. She adored her granddaughters and was an avid tennis player and a dedicated fan of the Boston Red Sox.
She was the wife of the late George R. Sutermeister who died on December 8, 1980, and also the sister of the late, Thomas Hayes, Francis X. Hayes, Mary Hayes, Theresa Hayes and Louise Milton.
She leaves her sons, Eric G. Sutermeister and his partner, Leah N. Guenther, of Beverly and John H. Sutermeister and his wife, Lisa Marie Scalone, of Northborough; her granddaughters, Genna and Julia Sutermeister; her sister, Madeline Stumpf of Hollis, New Hampshire and many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will honor and remember Anastasia’s life by gathering for calling hours on Saturday, January 22nd from 9 to 10:30 a.m. in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte.20), Waltham before leaving in procession to Saint Joseph’s Church, 142 Lincoln Road, Lincoln where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in North Cemetery, Wayland.
