Anthony G. Martin

Waltham – Mr. Anthony G. 'Tony' Martin, of Waltham, died Sunday, June 29, 2014 at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. He was 93.

Tony was born in Laconia, New Hampshire on September 24, 1920, a son of the late Lucien and Adelina (Coté) Martin, and was raised in Manchester, New Hampshire where he was a graduate of Saint Joseph's High School. On October 27, 1951 he married Lynn native Phyllis V. Ingham and the couple lived in Watertown for a time before moving to Waltham in 1955.

Until his retirement he worked as an electronics engineer for fifty years at the Watertown Arsenal which later became the United States Army Research Laboratory. A lifelong learner, Tony attended the Lowell Institute School of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Northeastern University in Boston and earned his bachelor's degree from the Harvard University Extension School.

He was a past president of the Association of Scientists and Engineers at the Arsenal; past chairman of the Charlesbank District, Boy Scouts of America; past president of Toastmasters International clubs in Watertown and in Waltham and he was a member of the Boston YMCA Outing Club Alumni, the Ballroom Dancing Club of Waltham and the Retired Men's Club of Belmont.

Tony and his family were lifelong active members of Saint Joseph's Parish in Waltham where he served as a past president of the Holy Name Society; a lector; Eucharistic minister; a greeter at Sunday Mass and was a member of the first Parish Council. He was also a volunteer at Maristhill Nursing Home in Waltham. After Saint Joseph's closed he became a parishioner at Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church on Trapelo Road where he served as a greeter.

In addition to his wife of sixty-two years, Phyllis, he leaves his children, David R. Martin and his wife, Alice, of Watertown, Virginia C. Wheeler and her husband, Gerald, and Peter G. Martin, all of Waltham and many nieces and nephews.

He was also a brother of the late Blanche Levasseur, Marie Anne Durette, Joseph Martin, Antoinette Garon and Oscar Martin.

Family and friends will honor and remember Anthony's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Wednesday, July 2nd from 5 to 8 p.m. and again at 10 a.m. on Thursday morning before leaving in procession to Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
