Armando P. Del Campo

Armando Del Campo had a long, good life filled with many blessings. Two weeks ago, at age 95, you could find him at the driving range at Richardson's Ice Cream in Middleton practicing his favorite sport. Just a few days ago, he was doing what he had a life-long passion and natural talent for – sketching landscapes, people, and buildings with architectural integrity. He loved life and lived it to its fullest, always thankful and dedicated to the country that embraced him.
Armando was born on February 12, 1925 in Palma Soriano, Cuba. He is the son of the late Enrique and Consuelo (Del Campo) Perez. Raised and educated in Cuba, Armando earned both his Bachelor and Masters' degrees in architecture and civil engineering from the University of Havana. With a dream, desire and need to seek better opportunity, he immigrated to the United States in 1961.
Upon his arrival, he established a home in Waban, Massachusetts with his former wife and their children. Mindful and appreciative of his Cuban roots, the familiar smell of an authentic cigar filled the home and yard. He was forever joking he was on a "seafood diet" – always lured by his native dishes. On Sundays, Armando and the family would visit his mother and sister where he found his favorite dishes of black beans and rice, Ropa Vieja and flan, specially prepared for him.
In the United States, Armando began his career as a professional engineer but soon transferred his talents to various architectural firms in Boston. He eventually established his own company, Del Campo Associates, based originally in Newton, and later in Billerica, where he maintained his office and worked until his death. Armando always appreciated, and never took for granted, the value of hard work. At 95, he was still drawing and still sharing his visions, ideas and talents. His work and inspirations never stopped. It was a good life.
He had a captivating smile, but by the same token, he was a man of routine and in his own unacknowledged way, quite stubborn. Armando was eccentric but had a passion for things in life like cars, including a 1968 Pontiac GTO Convertible and several Corvettes. Armando appreciated the craftsmanship and was dedicated to buying American automobiles. He most especially enjoyed the sport of golf and was known for being on the course as often as possible.
As an active member of the Paulist Center in Boston, it was perhaps by the Holy Spirit and divine intervention, that he met Kathleen T. (Kelley) St. Germain. Through the parish's many activities, they enjoyed a wonderful love and friendship. In later years, Kathy and Armando worshipped at the Carmelite Chapel in Peabody and more recently at Most Blessed Sacrament Church in Wakefield. While taking his last breath in this life, his beloved Kathy remained by his side – his best friend and life's partner. It was a wonderful union.
After a life of keeping physically active with daily walks and rounds of golf amidst the other business and accomplishments of his life, Armando died peacefully on Saturday, July 4, 2020 at Lahey Clinic in Burlington. He was 95.
In addition to Kathy, he leaves his children, Armando 'Mando' Del Campo (Jacqueline) of Salem, Todd Del Campo of Ashland, Magdalena 'Sofia' Rufo (Gene) of San Clemente, California and Ricardo 'Rick' Del Campo of Henderson, Nevada and Kathy's daughter, Kerry A. Trippi (Frank) of Southborough; his grandchildren, Matthew Del Campo, Alyssa and Devin Del Campo, Derek, Kyle and Marisa Rufo and Leo Trippi; his former wife, Magdalena (Obrador) Swette (Larry) of California, and by his nieces and nephews including his godchild, Glenda Melendez Pizzi (John) of Waltham and their family. Armando was predeceased by siblings, Glenda Melendez and Henrique Perez.
Funeral services are private.
