Weston – Professor Arthur Uhlir, of Weston, died at home on Friday, June 17, 2016. He was 90.
Arthur was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 2, 1926, the son of the late Arthur and Helene (Houteling) Uhlir. After high school he earned his bachelor's degree, and while working at the Armour Research Foundation, his master's degree, both from the Illinois Institute of Technology in chemical engineering.
He then completed his education at the University of Chicago with another master's degree and a Ph.D. degree in physics. Arthur then joined the staff of Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey after which he became the Director of Research at Microwave Associates.
In 1970 Arthur began his academic career when he joined the Tufts University faculty as the chairman of electrical engineering. He was a fixture at Tufts for over twenty years where he served as Dean of the College from 1973 through 1980. He was an innovative educator, an active researcher, and a model mentor to both the student body and faculty.
Arthur married Ingeborg 'Inge' Nurnberger Williams in New Jersey in 1954 and the couple later settled in Weston, Massachusetts where they would raise their family.
In addition to his wife Inge, he is survived by his sons, Donald Andrew Uhlir and his wife, Mary, of Pistol River, Oregon, and Tucson, Arizona, and David Mason Uhlir and his wife, Mary Kraus, of Boulder, Colorado; his daughter-in-law, Kitty Uhlir, of Los Altos, California and his granddaughters, Kristina, Katherine and Janet Uhlir.
Arthur was also the father of the late Steven Arthur Uhlir.
