Waltham – Mrs. Barbara J. (Lanctot) Starmer Coen, of Waltham, died Sunday, January 10, 2010 at her home. She was 72. Barbara was born in Boston on August 26, 1937, a daughter of the late George E. and Mary L. (Brusie) Lanctot. After spending her early childhood in Watertown she lived all of her life in Waltham. A graduate of Waltham High School, Barbara worked as an executive secretary at Bentley College in Waltham until her retirement. Before that she had worked at BayBank in Newtonville. A spirited woman of strong faith she loved life. Family, friends and neighbors knew her as a willing helper whenever she was needed. She enjoyed gardening, bowling, nature, the outdoors and the beach, especially along the coast of Maine. Barbara volunteered at Bristol Lodge in Waltham and had been a Girl Scout leader for many years and a Boy Scout den mother. She was an active member of Saint Jude Parish in Waltham where she had been a member of the Ladies Sodality and a strong supporter of Saint Jude School and all of its endeavors. She had been the secretary for the Bright School P.T.A. and was a proud past member of the Civil Air Patrol. Barbara was the beloved wife of Edward A. Coen, Sr. and the devoted mother of Laura J. Starmer Langton and her husband, William, of Waltham, William R. Starmer and his wife, Michele, of Brimfield and Susan E. Starmer of Waltham. She also leaves her grandchildren, Joseph, Meredith, Nicholas, Geoffrey and Abigail Langton, Andrew, Robert and Zachary Starmer; her sister, Carolyn Foster of Lakehurst, New Jersey and many nieces and nephews. She was also a sister of the late Constance Pangburn, Audrey, Robert and G. Edward Lanctot. Her former husband, William C. Starmer, died in 1991. Family and friends will honor and remember Barbara's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and again on Thursday morning at 9:30 am before leaving in procession to Saint Jude Church, 147 Main Street, Waltham where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 am.
