Barbara A. ( Harris) Drakos

Auburndale – Mrs. Barbara A. (Harris) Drakos, of Auburndale, died Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at Maristhill Nursing Home in Waltham. She was 92.

Barbara was born in Hyannis on December 8, 1924, a daughter of the late Richard and Helen (Henderson) Harris. She graduated from Barnstable High School in 1942 and after that from Hyannis State Teachers College.

She entered the nursing field during World War II and graduated from Mount Auburn Hospital School of Nursing in Cambridge in 1946. During the war she worked as a cadet nurse in Boston.

In March, 1951 she married Boston native John Drakos in the Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Boston and the couple lived in Allston for a time before making their lifelong home in Auburndale. They enjoyed nineteen happy years together before John's death in 1970 at the age of forty-nine.

After that Barbara re-dedicated herself to her nursing career and became a full-time staff nurse at Newton-Wellesley Hospital until her retirement.

In retirement she enjoyed time spent with her family and with life's simple joys . . . a Fourth of July cookout, Christmas at home, reading a good book, bingo, knitting, class reunions with lifelong Hyannis friends, trips to Maine, to the theatre or to Foxwoods, and of course, watching the Red Sox win.

She leaves her children J. Richard Drakos and his wife, Gail, of Waltham, Paula Drakos of Auburndale, Charles H. "Chuck" Drakos and his wife, Laura, of Canton and Peter Drakos and his wife, Gina Marie, of Danvers; her grandchildren, John, Brian, Peter, Jr., Claudia and Isabella Drakos and her sister, Patricia Williams and her husband, Bob, of Micco, Florida.

Barbara was also a sister of the late Eleanor Harris.

Family and friends will honor and remember Barbara's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Sunday, June 11th from 3 to 7 p.m. and again on Monday morning when her funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge.
