Barbara L. Murphy

March 6, 1949 — October 8, 2020

Barbara L. Murphy, of Newton and formerly of Waltham, died at her home on Thursday October 8, 2020. She was 71 years old.

Barbara was born on March 6, 1949, the daughter of the late Richard and Ida (Peters) Murphy. She was raised and educated in Waltham where she lived her entire life before moving to Newton six years ago. After graduating from Waltham High School with the class of 1967 she worked at various local companies in their accounting departments. Later she would own and operate Smurf's Transportation out of Waltham. Barbara was little in stature so naturally her nickname became "Small Murph", hence the name of her company. She loved her job just as much as she did her employees and the interaction she had with the people of Waltham. At the end of the day, her business bottom-line wasn't about revenue but rather the well-being and happiness of those who worked with her.

She loved to follow the local sports teams, her favorites being the Bruins and Celtics. For years she was a Celtics season ticket holder and she delighted in taking relatives to games throughout the year. Being such a diehard fan she was recently interviewed by Brian Scalabrine on the pregame show where she was happy to offer her advice to Coach Stevens live on air. Her happiest moments came from spending time with family. Never having children of her own, she had an extremely close and special relationship with her nieces and nephews. She enjoyed many family trips, always a destination involving a beach; from the family cottage on Sebago Lake to St. Thomas, Siesta Key, Hilton Head and beyond. The only trips not centered around the water were those following the Celtics on away games.

She will be dearly missed by her best friend and nephew Donald Atkinson, her many siblings, Judy Bolton (Bryan) of Buxton, Maine, Richard Murphy (Carol) of Waltham, Patricia Gotsis (George) of Holliston, Barry Murphy of Framingham, Jack Murphy (Kate) of Waltham and Christine Bartlett (Scott) of Bolton; her other12 nieces and nephews, many great-nieces and nephews and her great-great grandniece.

Family and friends will honor and remember Barbara's life by gathering for calling hours on Friday, October 16th from 4 to 7 p.m. in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham. Burial will take place privately in the family lot at Mt. Feake Cemetery, Waltham.

Barbara had a love for animals and had rescued several dogs and cats from shelters throughout her life. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Friends of the Plymouth Pound. This is the rescue where she got her latest dog, Zoomie.
