Waltham – Mrs. Barbara E. (Hubley) Sweny, of Waltham, formerly of Stoneham and Arlington, died Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at Meadow Green Nursing Home in Waltham. Barbara was 99 years young and just forty-nine days shy of her 100th birthday.
Barbara was born in Exeter, New Hampshire, a daughter of the late Sanford and Bessie (Thurston) Hubley. After high school she traveled to Cambridge to attend Mount Auburn Hospital School of Nursing, graduating with the class of 1940.
After getting her RN license she became a nursing instructor at Mount Auburn during World War II. She married Cambridge native Charles F. Sweny in 1945 and the couple soon moved to Arlington where they raised their family.
Barbara spent most of her career as a private duty nurse while caring for her husband and children. She lived in Stoneham for a number of years before moving to Waltham in 2007.
Barbara's husband of sixty years, Charles, died November 13, 2005.
She leaves her children, Susan Diguette and her husband, Paul, of Acton, Michael Sweny and his wife, Pat, of Walpole, Marie Cullen and her husband, Paige, of Casa Grande, Arizona, Joanne Ryan of Waltham and Julie Cox and her husband, Robert, of Tewksbury; her grandchildren, Jeffrey Diguette, Michael Cullen, Sarah Sweny, Matthew Ryan and Michael Sweny; her sister-in-law, Sr. Mary Ellen Sweny, SND of Ipswich and her niece, Mary Jane Zarnowski of Maryland.
Barbara was the sister of the late Evelyn Zarnowski.
Family and friends will honor and remember Barbara's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Friday, February 27th from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning before leaving in procession to Sacred Heart Church, 311 River Street, Waltham where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
