Waltham – Mrs. Barbara E. Tierney, of Waltham, died on Wednesday June 22, 2016 in her home surrounded by her family. She was 87.
Barbara was born on June 14, 1929, a daughter of the late Joseph and Evelyn (Corrigan) Hughes. She was raised in Waltham and graduated from Saint Mary's High School. After high school she worked as an operator for New England Telephone and Telegraph Company and then went to work as a sales clerk for Grover Cronin's Department Store on Moody Street. In her later years she enjoyed her job as a driver for Green Acres Country Day School in Waltham.
She was the wife of the late Robert A. Tierney who died in 2000.
She is survived by her children, Robert A. Tierney, Jr., and his wife, Lise, of Wolfboro, New Hampshire, Judith Tierney and her husband, Donald Blanchard, of Waltham, Ellen M. Alger of Waltham, Barbara E. Goyette and her husband, Colin, of Hudson, New Hampshire, and Matthew J. Tierney and his wife, Dawn, of Boothwyn, Pennsylvania; her grandchildren, Megan and Emma Tierney, Jeffrey and Matthew Alger, Christopher and Alex Goyette and Michael, Mary-Kate and Danny Tierney; her great-grandson Tommy Goyette; her siblings, Eleanor 'Suzie' DePass of Waltham, Patricia Nolan of Lexington, Roberta 'Robbie' Iler of Texas, Elizabeth Gringeri of Acton, Kathleen 'Cassie' Schloth of Reading and Joseph Hughes of West Roxbury and many nieces and nephews.
Barbara was also a sister of the late Virginia Dempsey.
Family and friends will honor and remember Barbara's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Sunday, June 26th, from 3 to 7 p.m. and again at 10 a.m. on Monday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Jude Church, 147 Main Street, Waltham where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
