Bartley V. Faherty

Bartley Vincent Faherty of Lexington, formerly of Waltham and Galway, Ireland went home to God on September 15, 2018 with his wife and children at his side.

Born in Killagoola, Moycullen, Co. Galway, Ireland as the 7th of 10 children to Kate O'Donnell and Thomas Faherty where he spent many happy days sitting on the Clydagh Bridge, taking his Mom to the Farmer's Market on Saturdays to sell her eggs, playing hurling for the Moycullen team, studying Carpentry at GTI, attending dances at The Seapoint Ballroom in Salthill and hiking up to the top of their own Cru Hill where you can see all the way to the Cliffs of Moher and Lough Corrib dreaming of moving to the USA. He lived for a time with his adored "Aunteen and "Uncleen" at the base of Cru and put his skills to work helping his Dad and brother John to build a modern new family home in 1955 where he returned to visit his parents and family.

In 1957 he emigrated to Boston to join his sisters in Brookline and immediately secured a job with Jordan Marsh as a Carpenter becoming a Foreman and member of Local 33. On Labor Day Weekend of 1958, he attended an Irish Dance at The Intercolonial and met the love of his life Mary Joan Coleman. He joined the Army National Guard that Fall and when he returned home they were engaged in June of 1959. He stayed connected to his Irish roots by playing hurling for Fr. Tom Burke's and Galway, organized the Galway Banquet each year, donated his time to help build and raise funds for the Irish Cultural Centre in Canton and was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians in Watertown.

Bartley and Joan began their married life in an apartment below his in-laws Marie and John Coleman in Allston. There they welcomed their first children Thomas, Sean and Joanne. In 1965 they bought their first home in Waltham and welcomed another daughter Kathleen. He loved Waltham and became a big part of the community through Our Lady's and St. Jude's Parishes, coaching Little League and serving as President of the PTO. In later years he sold real estate in Waltham and Sudbury then returned to his first love Carpentry at the local university. He was a hard worker, but never missed an Irish Dance on Saturday nights or taking his family on Sunday family visits or day trips.

Family was so important to him and one of Bartley's greatest joys in life was becoming a grandfather spending many Summer weekends at the Cape enjoying them and his own children. He loved golfing and the beaches at their beautiful Winter cottage in Dunedin Fl where they spent many happy years. He was chosen to be Godfather to Katherine and Thomas Doherty, Robyn Kenny, Thomas Tunney and Ciara Healy.

Bartley was a great storyteller and never forgot his native Gaelic. In his free time he loved to write about his homeland and published a song about Moycullen, a book about his childhood, wrote articles for Moycullen Matters and completed a children's book yet to be published. He was also an avid sports fan of the Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins and GAA Hurling.

Bartley will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 58 years Mary Joan, sons Thomas of Southborough and Sean of Gardner, daughters Joanne Mahoney and her husband Byron of Peabody and Kathleen of Marina Bay, daughter-in law Ellen, granddaughters Ashley Faherty, Laura Mahoney, Amanda Faherty, Alisha Faherty, grandsons Colin Mahoney and Neal Mahoney, sisters Maureen of Dorchester, Peggy of Medfield and Annie of Galway, brothers Miceal of Ireland and Thomas of England, brothers-in-law David Coleman and wife Kathy of Brookline and Daniel Driscoll of Dorchester along with many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, great grand nieces and nephews in the US, Ireland, England and Australia along with extended family, many great friends and neighbors. Bartley was predeceased by his parents Catherine née O'Donnell and Thomas, sisters Bridie of Galway and Julie of Brookline, brothers John and Paddy of Galway, brothers-in-law Neal of Brookline, Paddy of Galway, Peter of Dorchester and Jim of Westwood, sister-in-law Peggy of Dorchester, nephews Michael of Dorchester and James Jr of Westwood and grand-nephew Richard of Braintree.

Family and friends will honor and remember Bartley's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Thursday, September 20th from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 10 a.m. on Friday morning before leaving in procession to Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Brighton.
