Mr. Bernard J. Horne of Waltham died Saturday, October 3, 2009 in the Tremont Rehabilitation Center in Wareham. He was 95. Bernie was born in Skowhegan, Maine, on June 6, 1914, the only son of the late Violet (Cowette) and Benjamin Horne. Bernie lived in Brookline for many years before moving to Waltham over fifty years ago. As a young man, he loved to ride his motorcycle. Bernie was a machinist with the Waltham Watch Factory for twenty-five years and, later, with the J.L. Thomson Company until his retirement. Bernie had a great smile, a good hearty laugh, and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. He also loved to dance. Bernie was the husband of the late Alberta J. (O'Brien) Horne and the father of the late Carol A. Melanson. He is survived by his daughter, Jeanne Richard of Carver; his grandchildren, Brian Richard of Grafton, Sandra Richard of Worcester, Karey Ann Langham of Los Angeles CA, Tara Green of Baldwinville, Kristen Leger of Newton, and P.J. Melanson of Waltham and nine great grandchildren. Family and friends will honor and remember Bernie's life by gathering at 10 am on Friday, October 16th in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street, (Rte. 20), Waltham before leaving in procession to The Blessed Sacrament Chapel of Saint Charles Borromeo Church, 51 Hall Street, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 am. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Friends of Carver Animals, Inc., P.O. Box 582, Carver, MA 02330.
