Bernard J. 'Red' Doherty

Waltham – Red Doherty was one of the kinds of people you would always hope to know and call friend. And many did. He died peacefully on Sunday, May 14, 2017 in Newton-Wellesley Hospital. He was 88.

Born on January 9, 1929 in Waltham, Bernard Joseph Doherty was a son of the late Bernard and Mary (Fahy) Doherty. He graduated with the class of 1946 from Saint Charles High School and joined the United States Navy during World War II.

A couple of years after he got out of the service he married Marguerite M. 'Peggy' Garrigan on March 31, 1951 in Saint Mary's Church and the pair made Waltham their lifelong home.

Affectionately called 'Red' by family and friends he was known as Bernie at the Boston Gas Company where he worked his entire career, first as a meter reader and serviceman and finally as a commercial customer service representative for many years before retiring.

His interests including building model ships, bowling and playing a round of golf. As a member of Saint Mary's Church he was also active in its Holy Name Society.

In addition to his wife of sixty-six years, Peggy, he leaves their children, Eileen Mahoney and her husband, Timothy of Exeter, New Hampshire, Martha Wheaton and her husband, Stephen of Waltham and Sheila Doherty Morris of Waltham; his grandchildren, Timothy Mahoney and his wife, Beth, Maureen Mahoney Flannery and her husband, Jay, Paul Wheaton and his wife Chloe, Laura Wheaton O'Brien and her husband, Frank, Stephanie Wheaton Ellard and her husband, Daniel, Kathleen Wheaton Earls and her husband, Enda, Kenneth and Neil Morris; his great-grandchildren, Abby, Andrew, Erin, Kelly, Stephen, Charlie, Frankie, Nora, Addison and Amelia; his brothers, Joseph Doherty of West Newton and Francis Doherty and his wife, Jean of Waltham and many nieces and nephews.

Red was predeceased by his siblings, William Doherty, John Doherty, Mary Dodson, Winifred Doherty, Anne McHugh and Theresa McGrath.

Family and friends will honor and remember Red's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Wednesday, May 17th from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Thursday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Mary's Church, 133 School Street, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
