Waltham Mr. Bernard P. Murphy of Waltham died Sunday, January 16, 2005 at Meadow Green Nursing Home, Waltham. He was 89. Born and raised in Waltham, a son of the late Thomas and Delia (Kearney) Murphy, he was a lifelong resident. Until his retirement five years ago, Mr. Murphy worked for 29 years as a court officer at the Waltham District Court. Before that he worked for 30 years as a driver for the Middlesex & Boston Street Railway Company in Waltham. He was also a Constable for the City of Waltham for the past 33 years and from 1964 to 1969 he served as a member of the Waltham City Council. Mr. Murphy was an avid sports fan who had a special fondness for the Red Sox and for Boston College football. Until the past year he had attended Red Sox spring training camps in Winter Haven and Fort Myers for the past several seasons. He was also a longtime local baseball umpire and also worked games for the high school state baseball finals and for the college baseball regionals held throughout the country. He served as Commissioner of Baseball Umpires for the Inter-City League for 27 years and had been Past President of both the Eastern New England Baseball Association and the New England Collegiate Baseball Association. Mr. Murphy was also a member of the Massachusetts Constables Association, the Knights of Columbus, Council No. 147 in Waltham, the Waltham Elks and the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge No. 1018 in Waltham. The husband of the late Mary A. (Cormier) Murphy, he leaves his children, Bernard G. Murphy and his wife Jane of Dover and Jean M. Monaghan and her husband Thomas of Waltham; his grandchildren, Julie and Sean Monaghan of Waltham and Christopher, Jennie and Catherine Murphy of Dover; one brother, Joseph Murphy of Yarmouth; two sisters, Beatrice Burns and Elizabeth Gallagher both of Waltham and many nieces and nephews. He was also a brother of the late Capt. Thomas Murphy USAAC, Francis Murphy, Mary Ryan and A. Catherine Murphy. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral at 9 a.m. Saturday from The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham followed by a Funeral Mass in Saint Charles Borromeo Church, 51 Hall Street, Waltham at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
