West Yarmouth Mr. Bernard F. Shadrawy of West Yarmouth, formerly of Waltham, died Sunday October 9, 2005 at his home. He was 87. Born in Essex Junction, Vermont, the son of the late John M. and Agnes M. (Thomas) Shadrawy, he was raised in Boston where he graduated from Boston English High School. He also lived in Brookline for many years before moving to Waltham in 1948 where he lived for more than fifty years. Most recently he and his wife were residents of West Yarmouth and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. During the Big Band era of the late 1930s and early 40s he started his own Boston orchestra called Bernie Shadd and his Salesmen of Swing and toured throughout New England. At the same time he attended Northeastern University in Boston and graduated with a law degree in 1941. From 1942 until 1946 he served with the U.S. Army. In 1946 he opened his law practice in Boston and in 1952 began a career working for the City of Boston Assessing Department, serving under three Boston mayors and eventually becoming the Chairman of the Board of Review. He also served as president of the International Association of Assessing Officers. He also held posts with the Northeast Regional and Massachusetts assessors associations. He was a life member of the Greater Boston Real Estate Board. In 1976 he left public life and returned to a private law practice in Boston. Mr. Shadrawy also belonged to several other professional associations, including the Massachusetts and Boston real estate boards, the Massachusetts Bar Association and the National Tax Institute. He was also a member of the Bishop Chevrus Assembly, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus in Boston and had been a longtime active parishioner at Saint Jude Church in Waltham. He leaves his wife of 62 years, Rita M. (Mastrangelo) Shadrawy; one son, Bud Shadrawy of Newton; one daughter, Judith A. Cahill and her husband, Ralph of Franklin; five grandchildren, Fran Shadrawy, Mark Cahill and his wife Debra, Andrew Shadrawy, David F. Cahill and his wife Nichole and Haley S. Shadrawy; two great-grandchildren, Miranda and Isabella Cahill; and one sister, Anita Handy of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was also the grandfather of the late Michael Shadrawy. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral at 9:30 a.m. Friday from The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham followed by a Funeral Mass in Saint Jude Church, 147 Main Street, Waltham at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge.
