Osterville – Mr. Brian J. Long, of Osterville and Waltham, died Saturday, December 8, 2012 at his home in Osterville. He was 78.
Brian was born in the Brighton neighborhood of Boston on March 28, 1934, a son of the late Bernard F. and Helen (Floyd) Long. A graduate of Newman Preparatory School, he served with the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict.
He later earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Suffolk University in Boston. He married Eileen E. Phillips on October 11, 1958 in Saint Patrick's Church in Watertown. They lived in Waltham for many years and later divided their time at their home in Osterville.
After a thirty year career Brian retired in 2002 as the Contracts Manager for Textron Specialty Materials Company in Lowell.
Brian was an avid Boston sports fan and followed Notre Dame football religiously. He was a member of the Brighton Lodge of Elks. He enjoyed a good round of golf with friends and was quite talented on the course and known for his good shot. With a love for travel he was able to experience many parts of the world. He was a member of the Old Barnstable Fairgrounds. He also loved all things Irish and was proud of his Irish ancestry. Like most people who live on the Cape he loved being near the sea and the beach.
His wife of 40 years, Eileen, died February 23, 2000 and he was predeceased by his daughter, Elizabeth P. Long, in 1995. He was also predeceased by his brother, Leo Long.
Brian leaves his children, Brenna J. Long of West Hyannisport, Brian J. Long of Osterville and Heather J. Long-Milstead and her husband, Rob, of Alpharetta, Georgia; his sister, Winifred Gorham of Randolph and his brother, Kevin Long of New Port Richey, Florida; many loving nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will honor and remember Brian's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. and again on Wednesday morning in Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 76 Wianno Avenue, Osterville where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 AM. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Osterville.
In lieu of flowers memorials in his name may be made to a charity of one's choice.
