Brother Leonard F. Haley, SM, of Boston, died Tuesday, June 4, 2024 at Maristhill Nursing Home in Waltham. He was 84.
Brother Leonard was born in Cambridge on July 11, 1939, a son of the late Leonard and Mary (McCullough) Haley, and was raised in Somerville. A year after graduating from Somerville High School he entered the Marist Novitiate in Staten Island, New York and received his first profession on December 8, 1959. His perpetual profession came four years later. He earned his bachelor’s degree in religious studies at the University of Detroit.
From there he embarked on a sixty year ministry with the Society of Mary. Fr. Leonard served the community in a variety of capacities as an administrator, pastoral and hospital ministries, and as a volunteer. He served at Notre Dame High School in Harper Woods, Michigan, Holy Name Parish in Detroit, Mount Carmel Parish in Methuen, Saint Anne Parish in Lawrence, Saint Joseph’s Parish in Haverhill, Saint Lucy’s Parish in Methuen and at the Marist homes in Framingham and in Boston. In retirement he continued his service to the Church and assisted at several area parishes including Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted in Waltham.
Brother Leonard leaves his brother, Robert Haley (Diane) of Hudson, his nephew, niece, cousins and their families as well as his confreres in the Society of Mary Community.
Family and friends will honor and remember Bro. Leonard’s life by gathering to visit in Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 10th followed by his Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden.
