Bruce A. Courtney

January 5, 1942 — September 28, 2018

Bruce Courtney was one of the good guys. He lived a fruitful and prosperous life that was filled with the blessings of a loving marriage, healthy children, and grandchildren with whom he cherished spending time. These were the things that made him happy. Bruce died unexpectedly on Friday, September 28, 2018. He was 76 years old.

Bruce A. Courtney was born January 5, 1942. He was a son of the late Charles V. Courtney who died when Bruce was two years of age. His mother, Barbara G. (Potter) Courtney remarried to Joseph Trombley who raised him. He graduated from Waltham High School with the class of 1960. In high school he ran track and played for the football team.

He married Mary L. Leonard in Saint Mary's Church on September 5, 1964 and they made Waltham their home to raise their four children. They moved to Marshfield in 2004 and Bruce cared for Mary in her later years of poor health until her death on November 16, 2016.

Bruce worked as a civil engineer for the City of Waltham for many years before taking a position as Superintendent of the Highway Department for the Town of Wellesley. He was well respected amongst his co-workers and the town's administration. He loved New England winters, and gearing up for the storms so that the roads were cleared and the streets were as safe as possible. He knew how much depended on his efforts, and after many years he began an enjoyable retirement in 2002.

He was the antithesis of liberal, and this often provided for challenging discussions about politics and current affairs with anyone who was brave enough to engage. As an avid reader, he had read all of Tom Clancy's books multiple times. He was quite handy and kept busy with various projects around the house. Bruce was actively and enthusiastically involved in the raising of his nine grandchildren as well.

Bruce leaves his children, Bruce J. Courtney (Caroline Tanner) of Washington, D.C., Brian S. Courtney (Sumiko) of Sewickley, Pennsylvania, Karen C. 'KK' Rumrill (Dave) of Natick and Scott M. Courtney (Sue) of Marshfield; his grandchildren, Dorottya, Cooper, Lily, Kai, Charlie, Max, Rin, Abby and Katie; his sister Charlene Doucette of Medway; sisters-in-law Katherine Beninati (John) of Waltham, Ruth Ledoux of Marshfield, Barbara Yobaccio of South Yarmouth; also survived by many nieces & nephews as well.

Family and friends will honor and remember Bruce's life by gathering for calling hours on Tuesday, October 2nd, from 4 to 8 p.m. in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street, (Rte. 20), Waltham and again on Wednesday when his Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
