Carmel (McKeown) of Waltham, died peacefully on Saturday, June 22, 2024 at Miriam Boyd Parlin Hospice Residence. She was 87.
A daughter of the late Richard and Jane (Kelly) McKeown, Carmel was born on February 27, 1937 in Carrickmacross, County Monaghan, Ireland. Carmel began her accomplished healthcare career in London, England where she earned her nursing degree from Mile Hospital. She immigrated to the United States in 1967, settling in Brookline Massachusetts and later moved to Waltham in 1982. Carmel’s career in nursing spanned many years during which time she touched the lives of so many with her unwavering dedication, compassionate care and leadership skills. A life-long learner, Carmel went on to earn her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Emmanuel College and her Master’s in Business Administration from Anna Maria College. She ultimately served as the Director of Nursing at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston for over eighteen years. Carmel also held a position as a medical reviewer for the Massachusetts Peer Review from 1985 until her retirement in 2002.
Altruistic and generous at heart, Carmel was a long-time, active member in her parish of Saint Charles Borromeo in Waltham where she volunteered in its St. Vincent de Paul Society. She also enjoyed her participation in Child Fund and served as a long term sponsor for multiple children in need.
Carmel was predeceased by her husband, Patrick Joseph Moynihan in 2000 and her siblings, Ann Clahane and Joan F. Gallagher.
She leaves her sister, Mary McKeown of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada and also many loving nephews, and their families and cherished friends.
Family and friends will honor and remember Carmel’s life by gathering on Monday, July 15th in Calvary Cemetery, 250 High Street, Waltham where her graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. There are no calling hours.
