Waltham – Mr. Charles J. Cononi, of Waltham, died Saturday, November 14, 2015 at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. He was 74.
Charlie was born in Natick on July 5, 1941, a son of the late Amilcare and Vera (Balboni) Cononi, and was raised in Wellesley. He graduated from New York Military Academy in Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York and after that attended Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa.
A graduate of Lowell Technical Institute he became the superintendent of the Wellesley Highway Department until his retirement. He was also a member and past president of the Norfolk, Bristol and Middlesex Highway Association.
For many years Charlie and his family spent many happy winters skiing, especially on trips to Sugarbush Mountain in Warren, Vermont. He was also a skilled woodworker.
He leaves his wife of forty-seven years, Patricia A. (Clancy) Cononi; his children, Rachel E. Cononi and her husband, Andrew J. Weinschenk, of Washington, DC and Charles M.C. "Chip" Cononi, and his wife, Susan A., of Waltham and his grandchildren, Calvin J. and Jordan E. Cononi and Elizabeth C. and Wilson M. Weinschenk.
Charlie was also the brother of the late Peter Cononi.
Family and friends will honor and remember Charlie's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Wednesday, November 18th from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 11 a.m. on Thursday morning when his funeral service will be held. Burial will be private.
