Milford - Mr. Charles B. Malloy, of Milford, formerly of Waltham, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, October 3, 2009 at Framingham Union Hospital following a short illness. He was 88. Charlie was born in Waltham on January 20, 1921, a son of the late Charles and Rose (Pazzano) Malloy and had been a resident before moving to Milford several years ago. As the oldest of ten children, he was a graduate of Saint Joseph's Grammar School in Waltham and attended Saint Mary's High School in Waltham until the death of his father made it necessary for him to go to work to help his mother support their large family. Married in 1941, Charlie served honorably with the United States Navy during World War II and returned to Waltham to raise his family. He loved sports and coached both Little League and Connie Mack League baseball for many years. He worked at Beacon Valve Company as a supervisor until he and his wife, Edna, bought High Street Variety in Waltham. Their little store became a hugely popular submarine sandwich shop and he worked there until his retirement. After that Charlie and Edna moved to Milford where they made their home with their daughter Margie and son-in-law Dick Young. Charlie was a very loving and attentive husband and his life revolved around Edna and his large family. His devotion has been the legacy from which his family continues to draw strength. An avid bowler and golfer he had remained active in leagues and was anticipating the start of the Fall sports season. He loved to watch the Red Sox and Patriots and he considered politics to be another contact sport and was always up to the challenge of lively discussions on any topic. His sense of humor was wonderful and his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren can all attest to his loving way of teasing. He made them think, he made them smile, and he taught them all about what love and family really mean. He leaves his beloved wife of 68 years, Edna L. (Mitchell) Malloy; his children and their spouses, Judith and Jack O'Brien of South Dennis, Charlene and Richard Stolowski of Waltham, Margie and Richard Young, Michael and Kathy Malloy and Kevin and Nancy Malloy, all of Milford; his daughters-in-law, Cleo Goncalves Malloy and Constance McLeod Malloy; his adoring grandchildren, Brendon Malloy, Julie Robbins, Tim and Terry Malloy, John O'Brien, Kate Cuggino, Janet Stolowski, Joann Phillips, Chris Stolowski, Amy and Justine Young, Michael, Meagan, Molly, Kevin and Stephen Malloy; his brothers and their wives, James and Kathy Malloy of Florida and Patrick and Hughena Malloy of Missouri; 17 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Charlie was also the father of the late Bernard R. Malloy and a brother of the late Joseph, Richard, Robert, Frederick and John Malloy, Peggy Rochinski and Betty Layton. Family and friends will honor and remember Charlie's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Mary's Church, 133 School Street, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham. Memorial donations may be made to the Mass. Eye and Ear Infirmary, 243 Charles Street, Boston, MA 02114.
