Waltham - Mr. Clifton R. Wirth, formerly of Weston, died Tuesday, May 8, 2018 in Veterans Administration Hospital in Bedford. He was 91.
Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on February 6, 1927, he was a son of the late Frederick and Genevieve (McKigney) Wirth. Raised and educated in New Jersey he was a graduate of Holy Family High School and later earned a degree from Meinzinger Art School Detroit. He honorably served the country in the United States Army during World War II. He and his wife Catherine were married in 1950 and lived many years in the Detroit area before making Chicago their home for over 22 years. Catherine died in July 2001 and Cliff later moved to Weston 2010.
Both professionally and as a hobby Cliff worked as a cartoonist. For over 22 years he worked for the Chicago Sun Times Newspaper and later freelanced for the Citizens Utility Board in Chicago. He always had pen and paper in hand. He and Catherine raised a family of seven and often the family pets were either French or English Bulldogs. His move to Weston afforded him friendships at The Brook School where he resided and friendships through the council on aging.
In addition to his wife, Catherine he is predeceased by their son, Brian T. Wirth and siblings, Donald 'Buddy' Wirth, Frederick 'Fritzy' Wirth and Doris McCarthy.
He leaves his children, Robert C. Wirth (Helen Yu) of Alameda, California, Catherine L. Burton-Snell (Roger) of Saugatuck, Michigan, Timothy E. Wirth (Linda) of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, Patricia A. Wirth-Moody (William) of Waltham, Massachusetts, Gary D. Wirth (Patty) of Leander, Texas, and Bridget M. Wirth-Tremaine (Kim) of Algonac, Michigan; his sister, Margaret Wirth of Royal Oak, Michigan; 17 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held privately in Michigan. Burial is in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield, Michigan.
