Daniel Patrick Murphy died March 18, 2023. He had been in residential care at Meadow Green in Waltham, MA, since suffering a stroke in 2017. The cause of death was heart failure.
Born on October 28, 1957, Dan grew up in Riverside, CT, the youngest of five children of John P. Murphy, a physician, and Dorothea (English) Murphy, a university dean at Pace University.
Dan was a beloved sibling and uncle. He is survived by his brother Jerry and sister-in-law Jane Murphy of New York City; sister Jane Murphy and brother-in-law Marc Jasmin of Waltham, MA, and family; and sister Nancy Murphy and brother-in-law William Anderson of Myrtle Beach, SC, and family. He is also survived by his niece Caitie Murphy and nephew Noah Murphy, both of New York City. Dan’s brother Ken Murphy passed away in 2019, and his niece Cristi Gadue in 2005.
Dan’s early interest in aviation led him to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University where he obtained his private pilot’s license. Later he moved to Boston, where he completed his bachelor’s degree at Boston University, then applied his technical talents in advancing his career as a software designer and programmer.
Dan was especially well-read, with a keen interest in history. He was also a fan of opera, jazz and crossword puzzle construction, and studied a variety of languages, including ASL. He was well-known for his puns, quick humor, thoughtfulness, and his sweet tooth. Dan will be sorely missed and long remembered.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to More Than Words Books at https://shop.mtwyouth.org. And we wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at Meadow Green Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
