Stow - David L. Mitchell, 84, a native of Waltham, who resided in Stow, died on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at Massachusetts General Hospital due to complications from recent surgery.
Known by his friends as Dave or The Mitch, he graduated from Waltham High School in 1952. After serving his country in the United States Navy for four years as a medical corpsman both at the Naval Hospital in Charlestown and then aboard the U.S.S. Worcester, he earned a B.S. in business administration and then his law degree from Boston University. He was a partner for over 40 years at the law firm of Harnish, Jenney, Mitchell and Resh in Waltham.
During his career, Dave served the Waltham community through several civic and charitable committees including the Executive Committee of the Leland Home, the Rotary Club, the Hovey Institute, the Waltham Jaycees, and the Waltham Boys & Girls Club. Outside the office, Dave was an avid golfer. He cherished memories forged with many foursomes who became dear friends on the links of Oakley Country Club and Brae Burn Country Club.
Over the course of the last fourteen years Dave faced a series of health issues, including a post-op stroke resulting in Aphasia, which sidelined him from his work and his love of reading. But with his determined spirit, and his wife Elaine by his side, along with the outstanding resources of Massachusetts General Hospital and the BU Aphasia Resource Center, he worked diligently to overcome each obstacle that came his way.
In addition to his wife of 60 years, Elaine, Dave is survived by his children, Todd Mitchell and his wife, Geell, of San Diego, California, Stacey Mitchell and her companion, Robert Pinette, of Maynard, Brad Mitchell and his wife, Lori, of Franklin and Jodi Mitchell and her husband, Robert Villano, of Miami, Florida; his grandchildren, Daniel, Taylor and Mitchell Sweeney, Naia and Giana Mitchell, Catherine Villano, and Kieran and Finn Mitchell and his former son-in-law, Robert Sweeney.
