Domenic Cuttone

February 15, 1929 — February 26, 2017

Waltham – Domenico 'Domenic' Cuttone was born on February 15, 1929 in Ucria, a province of Sicily, Italy, to the late Vincenzo and Rosalia (Rigoli) Cuttone. After a period of failing health, Domenic died in his much loved home with family by his side on Sunday, February 26, 2017. Domenic had just celebrated his 88th birthday and is now reunited with his beloved wife Nunziata 'Nancy' (Lembo), who died on April 6, 2015 after struggling with Alzheimer's disease. "Riposino in pace . . . May they rest in peace".

At age 27 and in the company of his wife, Nancy, and their 9-month-old son, Vinny, the Cuttone family set out for the United States aboard the Cristoforo Colombo ship, docking at Ellis Island in New York City on April 30, 1956. With fervent prayer and hope for their new beginning, the Cuttones made their way to Waltham, a place they would call home for the duration of their lives. Citizenship was awarded on March 11, 1963 and life in America held such tremendous promise for Domenic and Nancy as they continued to grow their family and welcomed four daughters.

In Italy, Domenic was a farmer but when he came to America he was willing to find employment in any trade. For over 10 years, he paved and excavated with Olivo and Sons in Waltham and then became a bricklayer and mason for Parrella & Sons in Waltham until 1993. Throughout full time employment, he worked countless evenings and weekends landscaping and plowing snow for homes and businesses in the surrounding areas. In 1962, Domenic also began purchasing multi-family homes in Waltham and by 1993 was able to work full time maintaining his units, which he took great pride in keeping pristine.

Domenic fully devoted his life to his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, which meant everything to him. He loved to take walks with his wife and spend time at the beach with his family. He enjoyed cultivating his vegetable gardens and spent endless hours jarring sauce with his wife and children. Like many Italian families, Sundays were dedicated to church and time with loved ones. Domenic also loved dancing with Nancy and cherished the friendships they acquired through the Sons of Italy.

Domenic made it a point to never forget where he came from. As he told stories about his upbringing in Sicily, his sharp memory and attention to detail always made it feel like an adventure back in time. Over the course of his life, he brought all of his family back to Italy to meet relatives and experience his heritage.

Domenic's journey started as a search for a better life for his family but ended up much more. He was truly a selfless and compassionate man that inspired the lives of everyone around him.

In addition to his wife, Nancy, Domenic is predeceased by all his siblings who remained in Italy; sisters Rosaria "Sara" Casella, Giuseppa Borzi and Rosalia Martelli and brothers Carmelo, Vincenzo, Sebastiano and Antonio Cuttone.

His legacy of love and work ethic lives on in the hearts of his family: his children, Vincenzo "Vinny" Cuttone and his wife, Sandra, of Concord, Anna Meliones and her husband, Keith, of Wayland, Rosalie Weber and her husband, Don, of Omaha, Nebraska, Nancy McCarthy of Wayland and Mary Gately and her husband, David of Maynard; sister-in-law Vincenza (Gurgone) Lembo of West Newton, MA; sister-in-law Maria Cuttone of Ucria, Sicily, brother and sister-in-law Sebastiano and Theresa Lembo of Messina, Sicily; fourteen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews, here and in Italy.

Family and friends will honor and remember Domenic's life by gathering for calling hours at The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Sunday, March 5th from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Monday morning before leaving in procession to Sacred Heart Church, 311 River Street, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 480 Pleasant Street, Watertown, MA 02472.
