Waltham – Mr. Donald J. Barry, of Waltham, died Thursday, February 23, 2017 at Waltham Crossings. He was 92. He was born in Newton on February 1, 1925, a son of the late Raymond and Catherine (Delaney) Barry.
Don and his late wife, Rachel, were born just days apart, and not far from each other. That's how they kept it for fifty-eight years, after their marriage in 1958. Aside from summers spent in North Hampton, New Hampshire they remained lifelong Waltham residents.
He was reunited with Rachel almost eleven months to the day after her passing on March 24, 2016. It had been the longest stretch away from his beloved wife he'd ever spent.
As a veteran of the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, Don was a proud member of the American Legion Post 156 band where he played saxaphone under the leadership of the legendary Dot Slamin Hill.
Until his retirement he worked his entire life as a driver for the City of Newton Public Works Department.
The husband of the late Rachel M. (Sorrentino) Barry, he leaves his sons, Robert J. Barry of Waltham and John T. Barry of Charlestown, his brother Raymond Barry of Whitman and several nieces and nephews.
Don was also the brother of the late Claire Barry, Catherine Sullo, Ralph Barry and Edward Barry.
Family and friends will honor and remember Donald's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Wednesday, March 1st from 6 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Thursday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Mary's Church, 133 School Street, Waltham, where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
