Waltham – Mr. Donald R. MacKenzie, of Waltham, died Saturday, December 11, 2021 at Meadow Green Nursing Home following a period of declining health. He was 99.
Don was born in Ross Ferry, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia on December 29, 1921, a son of the late Roderick and Katherine (MacDonald) MacKenzie. He grew up in Cape Breton and married his sweetheart, Blanche Budge, on July 27, 1944.
In July, 1962 Don and Blanche moved to the States with their young family, settling in Waltham. Until his retirement Don worked as a mechanic for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority.
Retirement afforded the couple time to travel throughout the United States. They enjoyed many winters spent in Florida and warm weather trips 'back home' to Cape Breton. Don was an accomplished self-taught guitarist and singer who had great fun entertaining family and friends.
In addition to his beloved wife of seventy-seven years, Blanche, he leaves his children, Richard B. MacKenzie (Carol) of Waltham, Roderick S. MacKenzie (Christine) of Roswell, Georgia and Lester T. MacKenzie (Sharon) of Lexington; five grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
Don was predeceased by his eldest son, Arthur 'Artie" MacKenzie and was brother of the late Lincoln and Marguerite MacKenzie.
Family and friends will honor and remember Donald's life by gathering to visit from 10:30 a.m. to 12 Noon on Wednesday, December 15th in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham where his funeral service will be held at noon. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
