Waltham – Mrs. Doreen J. (Stapleford) Calson, of Waltham, died Friday, September 15, 2017 at Life Care Center in Acton. She was 91.
Doreen was born in Bath, England on May 23, 1926, a daughter of the late Frederick Stapleford and Edith Stapleford Horsell. She was raised in Gloucestershire, England a region two hours northwest of London. When the war came for the British in 1939 Doreen and her family met the challenge with sacrifice and courage.
It was during World War II that she met a handsome American GI by the name of Salvatore Calson and in 1945 the pair married and returned to the United States a year later, settling in Sal's hometown of Waltham.
Throughout her life she was a terrific wife and mother and when widowed at the age of fifty she met the future with same courage and determination that had seen her through the war years.
The wife of the late Salvatore Calson, she leaves her children, John Calson and his wife, Nancy, of Ormond Beach, Florida, David Calson and his wife, Ann, of Maynard, Sandra Calson of Dover, New Hampshire and Phillip Calson of Troy, New York and her grandsons, Steve and Scott Calson.
Family and friends will honor and remember Doreen's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Wednesday, September 20th from 5 to 8 p.m. and again on Thursday morning in Calvary Cemetery, 250 High Street, Waltham where graveside services will be held at 11 a.m.
