Waltham – Mrs. Doris I. (Griffith) McKenzie, of Waltham, died Wednesday, April 24, 2013 in Wingate at Reading. She was 98.
Doris was born in Somerville on July 31, 1914, a daughter of the late Frank and Minnie (Vidiean) Griffith. She was raised in Somerville and graduated from Somerville High School in 1932. In 1940, she married Ernest McKenzie, Jr. and the couple settled in Waltham in 1943.
She was a graduate of the Massachusetts College of Art and was a lifelong artist who specialized in oil paintings of still life, landscapes and seascapes. Her paintings were widely seen at local exhibits.
Her beloved husband, Ernie, died October 31, 2006.
Doris leaves her son, Richard A. McKenzie and his wife, Elaine, of Stoneham; her grandchildren, Joseph McKenzie and his wife, Dara, of Sandy Hook Connecticut, Andrew McKenzie of Mammoth Lakes, California and Janyce McKenzie of Waltham; her great-grandchild, Kylie McKenzie and several nieces and nephews.
She was also the mother of the late Janice Elaine McKenzie and a sister of the late Goldie Griffith, Pauline Cobham, Ruth Worth, Edward Griffith and Erwin Griffith.
Family and friends will honor and remember Doris' life by gathering to visit at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 27th, in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham, where her Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
