Retired Waltham Firefighter Douglas C. Joyce, of Waltham, died Wednesday, March 13, 2024 at his home. He was 86.
Doug was born in Boston on February 1, 1938 and had been a lifelong resident of Waltham. He joined the fire department in March, 1971 and retired after twenty-one years serving the city. He had spent most of his career at Engine 4 on Prospect Street.
Never one to remain idle he’d also worked for years as a technician and later, as an inspector, for Waltham Chemical Company. He’d also worked for a time as driver for Minuteman Oil and after his retirement from Waltham Chemical as a caretaker at Hovey House in Waltham.
He was a longtime member of the International Association of Firefighters, Local 866.
Doug was also an accomplished athlete and excelled at baseball, skiing and golf and remained active in sports throughout his life.
The husband of the late Dorothy A. (Cahill) Joyce, he leaves his children, Michael J. Joyce (Kimba Keesler), Kimberly A. Joyce and Dina L. Babineau (Dave), all of Billerica; his grandchildren, Ashley Carresi, Jason, Jamie and Jeff Babineau and his longtime companion and 'roommate', Marsha Edmunds.
He was predeceased by his mother and step-father, Mildred J. (Joyce) and Anthony Molis.
Family and friends will honor and remember Doug’s life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Monday, March 25th from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. His funeral service will held at Noon and burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
