Waltham – E. John Stockwood died Monday, September 30, 2024 in Meadow Green Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. He was 91.
Ephraim John Stockwood was born June 30, 1933 in Lower Island Cove, Newfoundland, Canada a son of the late Herbert and Ella (Sparkes) Stockwood. Raised in Canada he married Phyllis M. Marsh on January 8, 1955 and they later immigrated to the United States in 1957 settling in Cambridge where they made their home for ten years before moving to Waltham. Lovingly known to many as ‘Jack’…he worked as a carpenter for Vappi Construction for over twenty-five years, retiring in 1991.
He was an active member of First Baptist Church in Waltham and enjoyed membership and friendships from Waltham Triad Lodge AF + AM, the Scottish Rite Bodies and the Aleppo Temple Shrine, both in Boston. Jack also belonged to O.E.S. (Order of the Eastern Star) and in earlier days was active with Waltham Troop #248 of the Boy Scouts. He enjoyed traveling, spending time outdoors hunting and fishing, and crafting gifts for family and friends.
The Stockwood family offers heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful and caring staffs of Newton-Wellesley Hospital, Meadow Green Nursing & Rehab Center and Good Shepherd Community Care for the kindnesses extended to Jack during his sicknesses.
Jack was predeceased by his siblings, Louise (late Douglas) Feltham, Sylvia (late Wilfred) Martin and Roy (late Hazel) Stockwood. In addition to his wife of 69 years, Phyllis, he leaves his children, Deborah J. Stockwood of Ashland, Betty K. Stockwood of Waltham and Kevin J. Stockwood (Daisy) of Maynard; his siblings, Herbert (Jennifer) Stockwood and Cynthia (late James) Connors, both of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and Blanche (late Jim) Rutledge of Onaway, Alberta, Canada; and many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will honor and remember John's life by gathering for an evening wake in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Monday, October 7th from 4 to 7 p.m. His funeral service will be held on Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. in The First Baptist Church, 400 Lexington Street, Waltham, MA. The Rev. Dr. Alonzo Chisholm will officiate. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
