Earl M. Halstead

Waltham – Mr. Earl M. Halstead, of Waltham, died Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at Newton Healthcare Center. He was 90. Earl was born in Savannah, New York on September 1, 1918 and was a son of the late Ralph D. and Nellie May (Tyler) Halstead. He had been a Waltham resident for more than fifty years and until his retirement Earl worked as an electrical engineer at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford. During World War II he served with the United States Navy. After the war, Earl joined the United States Air Force and retired as a master sergeant with the Massachusetts Air National Guard after more than twenty-two years of service. He belonged to the PFC John M. Sullivan USMC VFW Post No. 10334 in Waltham, the North Waltham Senior Citizens Club and the Waltham Bowling League. He leaves his wife of 65 years, Margaret A. (Scanlon) Halstead; his children, James E. Halstead and his wife, Myra, of Framingham, Patricia A. Barlow of Arizona, Stephen J. Halstead and his wife, Maureen, of Marshfield and David Halstead of Waltham; 6 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Earl was also the brother of the late Lyle Halstead. Family and friends will honor and remember Earl's life by gathering for calling hours at The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. and again at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning before leaving in procession to Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 311 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA 02472.
