Earl Miners Harvey, 93, of Waltham, formerly of Weston, MA, died Tuesday, February 15, 2011. Born on January 24, 1918, he grew up in Oak Park, Ill., the son of William and Harriet Mary Harvey.
In 1936 he left the US and moved to Cornwall, England. While in England he studied and passed the exams to become a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects as well as a qualified structural engineer under the Institution of Structural Engineers. In England he also met his wife, Aileen, and they married in 1946.
After WWII, he and his wife returned to the US. In 1947, he attended the Harvard Graduate School of Design where he studied under Walter Gropius, and graduated with a Masters in Architecture in 1949.
While raising his four children in Weston, Earl designed and built his own house. He always maintained an active private practice and served for 15 years at MIT as Staff Architect before retiring in 1983. An accomplished ice dancer, trumpet player, artist, and pianist, Earl also loved to play tennis and had a private pilot’s license. He was a member of the Boston Skating Club for 40 years and played trumpet in the Wellesley Symphony Orchestra.
Earl volunteered his time and professional skills to many organizations including St. Peters Church and the Skating Club of Boston, and in particular to the town of Weston, where he was a member of the Board of Appeals for 22 years.
Earl is survived by his wife Aileen (Johnston) Harvey and their four children. Karen Harvey of Carbondale, CO, Ian Harvey of Sacramento, CA, Jillian Harvey-Asquith of Harvard, MA, Brian Harvey of Steamboat Springs, CO, his sons-in law, David Kolquist and Kerry Asquith, daughters-in law Koo Kyung Sook and Wendy Sefert Harvey; his grandchildren Alyssa Asquith and Kyle Asquith of Harvard, MA, Griffin Harvey of Steamboat Springs, CO, and Kisung Yun of Sacramento, CA. Earl also leaves behind his sister Jeannette Royle, of Cornwall, England, as well as many nieces and nephews in England.
