Waltham - On Saturday, December 19, 2015 Earlene M. Sherman, of Waltham, died peacefully in the Stanley Tippett Home in Needham. She was 86.
Earlene M. Noyes was born on February 2, 1929 in Topsfield, Maine, a daughter of the late Vern and Gladys (Bean) Noyes. She was raised and educated in Maine and had lived in Waltham for most of her life. She worked at the former Robert Hall Clothing Store on Main Street and the Piety Corner Nursing Home. She also worked many years as an aide at the former Metropolitan State Hospital.
In earlier years Earlene was a member of the Wal-Lex Bowling League and the Waverley Square Mother's League. She was a member of the former Congregational Church of Waverley Square but would often attend functions at Saint Luke's Church where her late husband was a parishioner.
Her children describe mom as a 'tough old bird' who always put her family first. She loved entertaining and kept her mind active with a crossword puzzle and a good book. Her favorite family game of dice called 'Mucca' was a pastime and Earlene was a talented quilter.
The wife of the late E. Dean Sherman, she leaves her children, David A. Sherman and his wife, Patricia, Deborah A. Sherman, Donna M. Sherman and her fiancé, Michael Deverix, all of Waltham and Dorothy J. Sherman and her partner, Ronald Langevin, of Woodbury, Vermont; her grandchildren, Gary Sherman and wife, Elizabeth, Scott Sherman and wife, Michelle, Danielle LeBarre and husband, Charles, Stephanie Hayes and her husband, Sam Brelsfoard, Sarah MacGillivray and husband, Michael, Shane Hayes and his partner, Michelle Clark, James Dean Sherman-Caffrey and Kayley J. Sherman-Johnson and her fiancé, Jason Griffin; her great-grandchildren, Haile, Ryan, Sebastian, Gavin, Alicia, Tyler and Rory; her siblings, Ina Noyes of Marlborough, Norris Noyes of Burlington, Garry Noyes and wife, Elizabeth of Waltham, Gladys 'Dixie' Curtis and husband, Ken, of Pittsford, Vermont; her stepbrother Herbie Pelkey and wife, Linda of Sturbridge; her sister-in-law, Judith Sherman of Marlborough and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.
Earlene was also a sister of the late Laverna Griffin, Barbara Rhoades and Norma Welch and sister-in-law of the late Richard Sherman.
Family and friends will honor and remember Earlene's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Saturday, December 26th from 2 to 5 p.m. and on Sunday, December 27th from 3 to 7 p.m. and again on Monday morning when her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
