Waltham - Mr. Edward J. Doherty, of Waltham, died Friday, April 10, 2009 in Newton-Wellesley Hospital. He was 82.
Ed was born in East Boston, on September 19, 1926, a son of the late John and Grace (Stretton) Doherty, and had been a lifelong resident of Waltham. Until his retirement he worked as a meter reader for forty years for the Boston Gas Company.
In his spare time, Ed loved music and enjoyed playing the saxophone for many years. He was a band member for the "Dad's and the Grandad's" for ten years. He also enjoyed his garden, golfing and loved reading Civil War history. Ed was a World War II and Korean War veteran serving with the United States Navy.
He leaves his wife of sixty years, Theresa M. (Belliveau) Doherty; his children, Karen A. Mahoney of Billerica, Nancy A. Weymouth of Littleton, Susan L. Devane and Patricia Doherty both of Waltham, Edward J. Doherty, Jr. and his wife, Janice, of Mansfield, and Andrea J. Foti and her husband, Jerry, of Waltham; one brother, Thomas Doherty of Natick; one sister, Barbara Murray of Mashpee; seventeen grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Ed was also a brother of the late John 'Jack' Doherty and Francis 'Butch' Doherty.
Family and friends will honor and remember Ed's life by gathering for calling hours at The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte.20), Waltham on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Jude Church, 147 Main Street, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Entombment will follow in Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum in Waltham.
