Waltham – Mr. Edward P. Kiburis, of Waltham, died Tuesday, March 24, 2009 in Golden Living Center in West Newton. He was 89.
Ed was born on August 10, 1919 in Boston, a son of the late Charles and Ada (Jossim) Kiburis and had lived in Waltham for over 58 years. He worked as a sheet metal worker for Cox Engineering Company for over 32 years, retiring in 1980.
He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps having served in World War II. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart Medal and Bronze Star Medal. He participated in active operations against an organized enemy and saw action in Iwo Jima.
Ed's passion was raising, caring for and racing homing pigeons which he has enjoyed since his teenage years and was still doing until the time of his death. Among his other interests and talents he enjoyed carpentry and had a talent for being 'hands-on' in maintaining his home.
He leaves his wife of 63 years, Isabelle C. (Waitkun) Kiburis; his children, Charles E. Kiburis and his wife, Marie 'Josie', of Nova Scotia, Canada and Maureen I. Wilkinson and her husband, Joseph, of Malden; his grandchildren, Joseph and Jeffrey Wilkinson, both of Malden, Mark Wilkinson and his wife, Kathleen, of Wakefield and Charlene Kiburis, of Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia; his great-grandchildren, Matthew and Michael Wilkinson. Ed is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Ed was the brother of the late Adeline Kaake, Wallace Kiburis and Robert Zenewicz.
Family and friends will honor and remember Ed's life by gathering for calling hours at The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. and again on Friday morning at 10:30 a.m for Ed's funeral service. Burial will follow in Saint Michael's Cemetery, Roslindale.
