Waltham – Mr. Edward F. McCarthy, Jr., of Waltham, died Saturday, May 11, 2013 at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston. He was 76.
Ed was born in Cambridge on April 10, 1937, the son of the late Edward F., Sr. and Katherine (Piggott) McCarthy. He was a 1954 graduate of Boston College High School and earned degrees from Bentley College and from Northeastern University.
A Waltham resident for most of his life he worked as an accountant and systems analyst for the Gillette Corporation, Badger Corporation, the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office and for the Massachusetts Highway Department.
He was a sports enthusiast who coached with Waltham's Little Nippers Baseball League. Ed loved spending time with his grandchildren and attending their sporting events and school performances.
Ed and his family were members of Saint Mary's Parish in Waltham since 1968 and where he was a longtime member of the parish bowling league. He enjoyed wintering in Clearwater, Florida and had a lifelong interest in golf, trains and antique automobiles.
He leaves his wife, Barbara A. (Stanton) McCarthy; his children, Edward P. McCarthy and his wife, Maria, of Waltham and Robert F. McCarthy of Burlington; his grandchildren, Jessica, Kelly, David and Ryan McCarthy; his sisters and brother-in-law, Peggy Finn and her husband, Paul, of Bedford, New Hampshire and Jeanne Leonard of Barnstable and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Family and friends will honor and remember Ed's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Wednesday, May 15th, from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Thursday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Mary's Church, 133 School Street, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
