Waltham – Mr. Edward P. McCarthy, of Waltham, died on November 10, 2011. He was 85.
Ed was born in County Tipperary, Ireland, on September 5, 1926, a son of the late Dennis F. and Elizabeth (Healy) McCarthy and moved to the United States at age 2. During World War II he served with the U.S. Navy. He was a police officer for the Cambridge Police Department for over twenty years, retiring in 1981. Ed was a very active parishioner at Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church in Waltham and was also member of the PFC John M. Sullivan VFW Post 10334.
He leaves his beloved wife of 63 years, Ruth E. (Kellogg) McCarthy, his son-in-law Gerald P. Kelly, of Waltham; his sister Florence Thompson of Cambridge; his sister-in-laws, Eileen McCarthy of Woburn and Emmeline Kennedy of Quincy; his step-brother Robert Ready of Cambridge; his grandchildren Colleen M. Hildreth and her husband, Christopher, and Scott E. Kelly and his wife, Karen, all of Framingham; his great-grandchildren Katelyn, Kelly, Michael and Jessica and is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Ed was the father of the late Lynda J. Kelly who died in 2008, and the brother of the late Joseph McCarthy, James McCarthy and John McCarthy.
Family and friends will honor and remember Ed's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Sunday November 13th, from 2 to 5 p.m. and again at 9:00 a.m. on Monday morning before leaving in procession to Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
