Waltham – Mr. Edward R. 'Red' Rotchford, of Waltham, died Wednesday, July 19, 2017 in Meadow Green Nursing Home after a short illness. He was 90.
Red was born on October 28, 1926 in Waltham, a son of the late Edward John and Margaret (Connolly) Rotchford. Raised and educated in Waltham he was a graduate of Saint Charles High School where he was a standout athlete in football and basketball. During the Korean War he served with the United States Army.
Red worked as supervisor in the parts department at Volkswagen of America in Bedford, Waltham and in Wilmington for over thirty-five years before retiring in 1992. At the polite encouragement of his wife he took up golf upon retirement and enjoyed a round with friends on the course.
His wife, Barbara M. (Curtin) Rotchford died May 4, 1998; his son, Michael S. Rotchford, died October 21, 2011 and his daughter, Joyce R. Rotchford, died on February 21, 2017.
He leaves his sons, Steven E. 'Rocko' Rotchford of Waltham, Gregg D. Rotchford and his wife, Maureen of Framingham; his daughter-in-law, Virginia M. "Ginger" (Cobuccio) Rotchford of Wareham; his grandchildren, Shawn, Kaitlyn and Michael Rotchford, Kristyn, Stacey and Edward Rotchford and Melanie Rotchford; his great-grandson, Robert Rotchford and many nieces and nephews.
Red was also a brother of the late Jack Rotchford, Mary Harwich and Margaret Kelley.
Family and friends will honor and remember Red's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Wednesday, July 26th from 4 to 7 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Thursday morning before leaving in procession to Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
