Ms. Edwina A. Hughes of Waltham died Tuesday, April 14, 2009 in her home. She was 82. Born in Pittsfield on July 19, 1926, Edwina was the loving daughter of the late Edward M. and Alice G. (Quilty) Hughes. She was educated at Saint Paul's High School in Daytona, FL and attended Saint Catherine's College in Minnesota, graduating with a B.S. in Physical Education in 1947. In 1966, she earned her Master's Degree from Boston University. After a short period working at Riggs Foundation in Stockbridge, she joined the faculty of Regis College in Weston in 1948 where, for over forty years, she made an invaluable contribution to the lives of her students. Edwina was an avid golfer, winning several tournaments. In the early eighties, she added professional training in photography to her repertoire, teaching courses to undergraduates and initiating an audio visual department at the College. Edwina is survived by her sisters, Gertrude M. Haven of Utah and Sandra H. Cher of Connecticut, and several nieces and nephews. Family and friends will honor and remember Edwina's life by gathering for calling hours at The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street, (Rte. 20), Waltham on Friday from 4 to 8 pm and again on Saturday in the Chapel of Regis College, 235 Wellesley Street, Weston, where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 am. Burial will be at 2 pm in Saint Ann's Cemetery in Lenox. Memorial donations may be made to the Regis College Alumnae Association, 235 Wellesley Street, Weston, MA 02493-1571.
