Waltham – Mrs. Eleanor T. "Susie" (Hughes) DePass, of Waltham, died Thursday, September 7, 2017 at Wingate at Sudbury. She was 92.

Susie was born in Boston on July 8, 1925, a daughter of the late Joseph and Evelyn (Driscoll) Hughes, and lived most of her life in Waltham. She was a graduate of Saint Mary's High School in Waltham and earned her bachelor's degree in English from Emmanuel College in Boston in 1948.

She worked for the New England Telephone Company after college and married John W. DePass in 1949. The pair made Waltham their lifelong home and raised their family of eleven children in the Ellison Park neighborhood of the city.

Susie was a lifelong learner, teacher to her children and an avid reader. She belonged to the Philanthropic Educational Organization, a group that provides educational opportunities for women worldwide.

The wife of the late John W. DePass, she leaves her children, David O. DePass and his wife, Christine, of Waltham, Paul J. DePass and his wife, Dagmar, of Auburn, California, Thomas H. DePass of Mountain View, California, Daniel W. DePass and his wife, Allesandra, of Randolph, Mark A. DePass and his wife, Heather, of St. Petersburg, Florida, Patricia A. Tolan and her husband, Robert, and Anne Marie DePass, all of Waltham; her sisters and brother, Patricia "Pat" Nolan of Newburyport, Roberta Isler of Texas, Kathleen "Cassie" Schloth of Reading, Joseph Hughes of West Roxbury; sixteen grandchildren , eleven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Susie was also the mother of the late Jack W. DePass, Joseph DePass, Mary E. Tibbetts and Jane E. DePass; grandmother of the late Nicholas DePass and Cori DePass and a sister of the late Virginia Belli, Barbara Tierney, and Elizabeth "Dolly" Gringeri.

Family and friends will honor and remember Susie's life by gathering for calling hours on Thursday, September 28th from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham. Committal services will be held on Friday morning at 10:45 a.m. in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
