Elizabeth A. ‘Betty’ Smith, of Weston, died Thursday, April 27, 2023 in Newton-Wellesley Hospital with her children by her side. She was 84.
Elizabeth Ann Murphy was born on April 5, 1939 in Newton a daughter of the late Richard and Alice (Deagle) Murphy. Raised in Newton she was a graduate of Newton High School. A longtime Waltham resident she moved to Weston in 2002.
Betty began work as a cafeteria worker for the Waltham Public Schools and then later worked for many years as an administrative assistant for the Waltham City Clerk’s office, retiring in 2002.
Social by nature, Betty was a very kind and special person who had many wonderful friends. She truly enjoyed spending time with them and attending various social events. Shopping excursions, a cup of coffee, volunteering in numerous capacities and time by the ocean, especially in southern Maine, are what made Betty happy.
She was the beloved mother of Gary W. Smith and his wife, Diane of Ogunquit, Maine and Susan S. Pasciscia and her husband, Joseph of Waltham; beloved ‘Mimi’ of Courtney Smith (Adam Richins) and Mariel Pasciscia. She also leaves her niece, Maureen Hughes, cousins including Bob Reynolds and the Hunter family, and her many friends at Merriam Village in Weston and those at the Weston Council on Aging.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Dorothy Hughes and Connie Murphy and her former husband, Francis J. ‘Frank’ Smith.
Family and friends will honor and remember Betty’s life by gathering to visit from 10 a.m. – 12 noon on Wednesday, May 24th in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham followed by her funeral service 12 noon. Inurnment will follow in Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum, Waltham.
